Symphony VR with Gustavo Dudamel and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra

Making of Symphony VR

Capturing and creating an immersive soundscape for the journey inside the heart and minds of an orchestra.

This groundbreaking project in partnership with Visualise, Glassworks and La Caixa takes people on a journey with one of the worlds most famous conductors and prestigious orchestras. We captured the 101 musicians strong orchestra from 22 countries with an unrivalled level of fidelity and breadth, which allowed us to post produce the sound from any possible position within or around the orchestra. This is true volumetric sound-production.

The latest technology was employed to record the sound for Symphony. Rehearsal at Gran Teatro del Liceo (Barcelona) with the orchestra conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

We worked closely with Sennheiser using parts of their latest Ambeo sound technology and other custom built hardware. One of these tools was the Ambeo Cube, which built the foundation of the 3D soundscapes. Using latest network enabled audio technology we also recorded one of the highest channel counts in history to record an orchestra with this spatial detail. All carefully observed for best possible performance by Grammy Award winning Tonmeister Dmitry Lipay.

Outside of the orchestra the film dives into abstract worlds, meaning that Schallgeber had to create immersive soundscapes for the inside of instruments, nebulas in space, starfields and even synapses in the human brain.

With a project of this grandeur it is vital that the end user experiences this sound to its full potential. Schallgeber worked with Glassworks in Barcelona and La Caixa (the end client) to optimise and fine tune the high resolution headset and the accompanying headphones with additional low end sound reproduction to also physically move the air around the user. Getting physically moved by music.
